How to Move from IELTS Writing Band 7 to Band 8
Band 7 writers know the rules. Band 8 writers have internalised them. The difference is fluency, precision, and consistency — not just more vocabulary.
Where you are vs where you need to be
Band 7 vs Band 8 — by criterion
Task Achievement
Band 7 — current
You address all parts with a clear position and support your ideas with relevant examples. Occasionally you over-generalise, lose focus in places, or your development is slightly uneven across paragraphs.
Band 8 — target
You sufficiently address all parts with a well-developed response. Ideas are relevant and extended — not just supported but fully explored. No significant under-development anywhere in the essay.
Coherence & Cohesion
Band 7 — current
Your essay is logically organised with clear progression. You use a range of cohesive devices, though there is occasional over- or under-use. Paragraphing is clear.
Band 8 — target
Logical sequencing throughout. You manage all aspects of cohesion well — reference, substitution, conjunction. Paragraphing is sufficient and purposeful. Cohesion feels natural, not mechanical.
Lexical Resource
Band 7 — current
You use a sufficient range with flexibility. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some awareness of style and collocation. Occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation remain.
Band 8 — target
Wide range used fluently and flexibly. Skilful use of uncommon items. Rare errors in word choice or collocation — when they occur, they are minor and do not affect meaning.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy
Band 7 — current
You use a variety of complex structures with good control. Many sentences are error-free. Some errors remain — particularly in less frequently used structures.
Band 8 — target
Wide range of structures. The majority of sentences are error-free. Very occasional inappropriate use or minor error. Grammar feels natural, not constructed.
Action plan
5 steps to reach Band 8
Eliminate all recurring grammar errors
At Band 7, you have errors. At Band 8, you have almost none. Audit your last five essays and identify every grammar error you made more than once. These are your recurring patterns — article misuse, preposition errors, subject-verb agreement, relative clause structure. Fix each one deliberately.
Make cohesion invisible
Band 7 cohesion is correct but noticeable — the reader can see the connectors working. Band 8 cohesion is seamless. Achieve this by using reference chains ('this approach', 'such measures', 'the former'), lexical repetition with variation, and subordination instead of explicit connectors.
Example
Instead of: 'Governments should invest in public transport. Furthermore, they should introduce congestion charges.' Try: 'Alongside investment in public transport, congestion pricing would further reduce the volume of private vehicles in city centres.'
Replace any strained vocabulary with precise alternatives
Band 7 writers sometimes use impressive-sounding vocabulary that feels slightly forced or unnatural. Band 8 vocabulary is wide but always precise — the right word in the right context. Read widely in academic English and notice which words appear in which contexts.
Achieve full development in every paragraph
Band 8 requires that no paragraph feels thin or rushed. Every body paragraph should have: a clear topic sentence, full explanation of the idea, a specific and detailed example, and a consequence or implication. If any paragraph ends before completing this cycle, it will hold you at Band 7.
Write essays that do not read as templates
Band 7 essays often follow an identifiable formula. Band 8 essays feel organic — the structure serves the argument, not the other way around. This means varying your introduction approach, not always using the same connector sequence, and letting the complexity of your ideas drive your sentence choices.
What keeps Band 7 writers stuck
Common patterns — and how to break them
Minor but persistent article errors (a/an/the)
This is the most common reason Band 7 writers cannot reach Band 8. English articles are rule-governed but with many exceptions. Study the rules for definite vs. indefinite vs. zero article systematically and apply them consciously until they become automatic.
Slightly over-formal or stilted vocabulary choices
Words like 'aforementioned', 'henceforth', 'elucidate', or 'ascertain' sound formal but feel unnatural in IELTS essays. Choose the most precise word — not the most formal. Band 8 vocabulary is elegant, not ornate.
Overusing nominalisations to sound academic
Nominalisations ('the implementation of measures' instead of 'implementing measures') are not automatically better. Use them when they genuinely improve the sentence — not as a default attempt to sound academic.
Essay feels structured rather than argued
Read your essay aloud. If it sounds like you are filling in a template ('In this essay I will discuss... Firstly... Secondly... In conclusion...'), it will not reach Band 8. The argument should feel like it is unfolding, not being assembled.
Examiner tip
The difference between Band 7 and Band 8 is consistency. Band 7 essays have strong moments and weaker moments. Band 8 essays are strong throughout. An examiner reading a Band 8 essay should find nothing to criticise — no thin paragraphs, no forced vocabulary, no mechanical cohesion.
FAQ
Common questions about moving from Band 7 to 8
How rare is Band 8 in IELTS Writing?
Approximately 5–10% of test takers score Band 8 or above in writing. It represents genuine advanced proficiency — not just exam technique. Most people who reach Band 8 have either lived in an English-speaking environment or have studied English to near-native level.
Can exam technique alone get me to Band 8?
Not reliably. Band 8 requires genuine language fluency — a wide vocabulary used naturally, near-error-free grammar, and ideas developed with real sophistication. Technique helps at lower bands; at Band 8, underlying proficiency matters more.
What type of reading helps most for Band 7 to 8?
Academic and quality journalistic writing in English: The Economist, The Guardian's long-form articles, academic essay collections. Notice how ideas are developed, how connectors are used naturally, and which vocabulary appears in which contexts. Active reading — not just reading — matters.
Should I aim for Band 8 if I only need Band 7?
Not necessarily. If Band 7 meets your requirement (most universities, immigration visas), the additional effort required for Band 8 may be better spent on other parts of the test. Only target Band 8 if it is explicitly required or if you genuinely enjoy developing your English.
