How to Move from IELTS Writing Band 5 to Band 6

Band 6 is the most common university entry requirement. Here is exactly what separates a Band 5 essay from a Band 6 — and what to fix first.

Typical timeframe: 4–8 weeks of focused practice

Where you are vs where you need to be

Band 5 vs Band 6 — by criterion

Task Achievement

Band 5 — current

You address the task but only partially — some parts of the question are underdeveloped or ignored. Your position may be unclear or shift during the essay.

Band 6 — target

You address all parts of the task with a relevant position. Your main ideas are present and mostly relevant, even if not fully developed in all areas.

Coherence & Cohesion

Band 5 — current

Your essay has some structure but lacks clear overall progression. You overuse basic connectors like 'firstly', 'secondly', 'also', 'and'. Paragraphing is attempted but inconsistent.

Band 6 — target

Your essay is coherent with an overall progression. Paragraphing is generally adequate. Cohesive devices are used but may occasionally be faulty or mechanical.

Lexical Resource

Band 5 — current

Your vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You rely on basic words and rarely attempt less common vocabulary. Spelling errors appear occasionally.

Band 6 — target

You have an adequate range of vocabulary. You attempt less common words — even if not always accurately. Errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Band 5 — current

You mostly write simple sentences. When you attempt complex structures, errors are frequent. Basic grammar (subject-verb agreement, articles, tenses) contains errors.

Band 6 — target

You use a mix of simple and complex sentences. Errors are present but they rarely prevent understanding. Basic grammar is mostly under control.

Action plan

5 steps to reach Band 6

1

Write a clear thesis in every introduction

The single biggest Band 5 problem is a vague or missing thesis. Your introduction must end with a sentence that states your position clearly. The examiner decides your Task Achievement score largely from the introduction.

Example

Weak: 'This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages.' → Strong: 'While remote working offers flexibility, I believe the disadvantages to team cohesion and productivity outweigh the benefits.'

2

Use one topic sentence per paragraph

Each body paragraph needs a clear opening sentence that states the main point of that paragraph. This single change makes your essay feel far more organised and helps the examiner follow your argument.

Example

Weak: 'There are many problems with social media.' → Strong: 'One significant problem with social media is its impact on young people's mental health.'

3

Replace basic connectors with varied ones

Band 5 essays are full of 'firstly, secondly, thirdly, finally'. These feel mechanical and immature. Replace them with a wider range: 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', 'As a result', 'This means that', 'On the other hand'.

4

Write a genuine overview for every Task 1

If you are doing Academic Task 1, a missing overview is the most common reason for Band 5 on Task Achievement. The overview is two sentences after the introduction summarising the two or three most important trends — no specific figures, just the big picture.

Example

Overview example: 'Overall, car ownership rose significantly in all three countries over the period, with Country A consistently recording the highest figures.'

5

Attempt one complex sentence structure per paragraph

You do not need to write like a professor. You just need to show you can use complex structures. Relative clauses are the easiest: 'Social media, which is used by billions of people, has transformed communication.' One per paragraph is enough to lift GRA.

What keeps Band 5 writers stuck

Common patterns — and how to break them

Starting every sentence with 'I think' or 'I believe'

Use academic framing for most statements: 'It is clear that', 'Evidence suggests that', 'Many argue that'. Save 'I believe' for your thesis and conclusion.

Repeating the same word 3–4 times in one paragraph

Identify your key topic word and write two synonyms or related phrases before you start. For 'technology': 'digital tools', 'modern devices', 'technological advances'.

Writing a conclusion that introduces a new argument

Your conclusion should only summarise and restate — never introduce new ideas. If you have more to say, it belongs in a body paragraph.

Writing under 250 words for Task 2

Below 250 words is an automatic penalty. Count your words. Aim for 260–290 — enough to develop two body paragraphs properly without padding.

Examiner tip

At Band 5, most students lose the most marks on Task Achievement — not grammar. Fix your thesis and paragraph structure first. A clear argument with some grammar errors scores higher than perfect sentences with no clear position.

FAQ

Common questions about moving from Band 5 to 6

How long does it take to move from Band 5 to Band 6?

Most students achieve this in 4–8 weeks of focused practice — meaning 3–5 essays per week with feedback. Passive study (watching videos, reading tips) does not improve your band score. Writing and getting feedback does.

What is the easiest criterion to improve first?

Coherence and Cohesion. Replacing basic connectors, adding topic sentences, and writing a clear overview are all habit changes that do not require deep language knowledge. These changes alone can move CC from 5 to 6.

Can I get Band 6 overall if one criterion is still Band 5?

Yes. The overall band score is the average of all four criteria rounded to the nearest 0.5. If you score 6, 6, 6, 5, your overall is 5.75 — which rounds to 6.0. Improving three criteria to 6 while one stays at 5 is enough.

Does Band 6 writing need to be error-free?

No. Band 6 explicitly allows errors — they just should not impede communication. A native speaker should be able to read your essay and understand every point, even if some sentences are grammatically imperfect.
