How to Write an IELTS Advantages & Disadvantages Essay
There are two variants of this question type and they require different approaches. Confusing them is one of the most costly mistakes in Task 2.

What is a Advantages & Disadvantages Essay?
Advantages and disadvantages essays come in two forms. The first simply asks you to describe the pros and cons of something — neutrally, with no need to take a side. The second adds a question: 'Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?' — which requires you to evaluate and reach a clear conclusion. Treating both the same is a common mistake.
Essay Structure
The four-paragraph structure
Introduction
45–60 wordsParaphrase the topic. For the outweigh variant, state clearly whether you think advantages or disadvantages are greater. For the neutral variant, simply introduce the topic without taking a side.
Body Paragraph 1 — Advantages
90–110 wordsPresent one or two advantages. Explain each clearly with reasoning, then support with a specific example or data. Do not list more than two — development wins over quantity.
Body Paragraph 2 — Disadvantages
90–110 wordsPresent one or two disadvantages with the same level of development as the advantages. For the outweigh variant, the side you believe is greater should feel slightly more developed or convincing.
Conclusion
40–55 wordsFor the neutral variant: summarise both sides. For the outweigh variant: restate which side outweighs the other and why, in one or two sentences.

Strong: paraphrase is specific, a clear position is taken (advantages outweigh), two disadvantages are acknowledged which makes the argument more credible, not just dismissed.

Mistakes to avoid
Common advantages & disadvantages essay errors
Treating the neutral and outweigh variants identically
If asked 'do the advantages outweigh', you must reach a verdict. A balanced conclusion saying 'there are pros and cons' fails Task Achievement for this variant.
Listing advantages and disadvantages without explanation
Each point needs: the point itself → why it matters → a specific example. A bare list of benefits with no development will not go above Band 5.
Putting both advantages AND disadvantages in the same paragraph
Separate them. One paragraph for advantages, one for disadvantages — regardless of how many you have in each.
Writing more than three advantages or disadvantages
Two well-developed points per paragraph score higher than four underdeveloped ones. More is not better in IELTS.
Examiner tip
Read the question exactly. 'What are the advantages and disadvantages?' and 'Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?' look similar but require different conclusions. Underline the question type before you start planning.

Does the outweigh question require me to state which side wins in the introduction?
Yes. State your overall verdict in the introduction and repeat it in the conclusion. This is what the examiner looks for when marking Task Achievement.
Can I have more advantages than disadvantages?
Yes. If you believe advantages outweigh, you can write two advantages and one disadvantage. Just make sure the disadvantage is still genuinely developed — not dismissed in a single sentence.
Is it acceptable to conclude that advantages and disadvantages are equal?
For the outweigh variant, no — you must take a side. For the neutral variant (What are the advantages and disadvantages?), a balanced conclusion is acceptable and expected.
What if I cannot think of two advantages?
Develop one advantage very well with a clear explanation and strong example. One fully developed point beats two weak ones every time in IELTS.
